St Peter’s Church - Far Sawrey & Woods

View of Sawrey

‘A delightful short walk.’

2 miles. Level easy walking.

This walk can be wet under foot crossing the initial fields.

  1. Take the road opposite the Sawrey Hotel – signed St Peter’s Church. The church soon comes into view on the hillside to your left, and can be visited.
  2. Walk beyond the church to a footpath on the right, just passed the last white cottage. Follow this across the fields to a gate followed by a stile.
  3. The path at this point is not obvious, but head straight up the field and you will soon see the stile ahead.
  4. Go through the stile into the woods and turn immediately right onto a permitted footpath. (Small sign – don’t miss it.) The path now delightfully winds its way through the oak woodland, and can be followed easily most the way, with the aid of occasional signpost.
  5. Eventually you drop down to the fields at the side of the Hawkshead - Sawrey road. At the path junction you have a choice of routes; you can turn left towards Near Sawrey (1/4 mile), where Hill Top and refreshment beckons. Returning to the path junction way you went. Or -
  6. Turn right at the junction and follow the path at the side of the beck back to the road near the church. Turn left and follow the road back to the start.

A woodland walk

Perfect for younger children or just for a short afternoon stroll

Parking at Far Sawrey is limited, but there is a seasonal bus service from Hawkshead (525)
