Hawkshead is the perfect base from which to explore the Lake District, with plenty to see and do both in the village and the surrounding areas.
The Lake District is known for the great outdoors: whether you enjoy hiking, biking, or even fishing, there’s something for everyone. Plenty of great walks can be enjoyed from Hawkshead – whether you’re looking for a gentle family stroll or something a little more challenging. The famously beautiful Tarn Hows is not to be missed, while panoramic views reward those who reach the summit of Latterbarrow. You’ll also find plenty of Wainwrights to bag.
For adventure lovers or simply a great day out, head to Grizedale Forest: standing just above Hawkshead, it’s home to nature trails, an outdoor sculpture trail, Go Ape, and plenty more. Meanwhile, there’s fantastic fishing to be enjoyed in Esthwaite Water, with the Esthwaite Trout Fishery easily reached by foot or car a couple of miles south of the village.
The area is also perfect for cycling, with bike hire available at the Tourist Information Centre in the heart of the village; and cycling routes which pass through stunning landscapes and stop by fascinating heritage attractions.
Speaking of heritage, Hawkshead and its surroundings are packed with the opportunity to discover a rich history and culture. Visit William Wordsworth’s former school; see the places which inspired Beatrix Potter and explore her former home of Hill Top House; discover nearby Wray Castle; and head to the nearby village of Coniston for a further insight into the area’s history.
In the mood for some retail therapy? You’ll find excellent independent shopping in Hawkshead, with everything from handmade gifts to outdoor clothing; local food and drink to fine art. You can even get hands on, with workshops offering everything from chocolate making to glass blowing. Once you’ve explored, refuel at one of the village’s cafes and local pubs.
As well as its claim to be the prettiest village in the Lake District’, Hawkshead can also justly claim to be at the centre of the National Park and the perfect starting point for your exploration of this beautiful corner of England.
