Some ideas for great days out in and around Hawkshead – without the use of the car
Great day out in Coniston
Transport: Walk to Coniston via Tarn Hows, or take the 505 bus service to Coniston – walk or bus back.
With plenty to do in the nearby village of Coniston, this day starts with either a 4-mile walk to Coniston via Tarn Hows and the Cumbria Way, or a short bus ride. You can then either spend the day in Coniston, or take one of the boats across the lake to Brantwood, John Ruskin’s former house.
Lake Windermere – Bowness – Ambleside
Transport: Take the 525 bus service– Cross-lakes Shuttle – Seasonal) via Sawrey to the ferry. Cross to Bowness, and then boat to Ambleside. Return by 505 bus service.
This is a great day for all the family, with plenty to do in Bowness and Ambleside. The lake steamers travel south to Lakeside, with Aquarium on the lake and the Haverthwaite Steam Railway, and north to Ambleside. For enthusiastic rowers, boats are available for hire at Bowness.
Grizedale Forest park
Transport: Walk on good paths (3.5 miles) or take the 525 bus service (cross lakes shuttle) to Grizedale visitor centre. Walk or bus back.

Picnic with views
Transport: Take the 525 bus service to Far Sawrey – return by the same service.
Beautiful picnic spots at either Moss Eccles Tarn, or Wise Een Tarn – panoramic view of Langdale Fells. Take a short walk north (1 – 1.5 miles) from the village along a bridleway (start opposite Hill Top) leading onto Claife Heights. There are also several walks from the village – St Peter’s Church and Beatrix Potter’s house Hill Top.
Picnic and paddle
Transport: Take the 525 bus service in the direction of Bowness, to Ferry Nab – return by the same service.
Just a short walk north of the ferry there is a fantastic picnic spot on the very edge of the lake. There is lots of space for all the family.
Bus out – walk back
Rather than rushing to catch the bus back, why not bus out and walk back at your leisure.
Take the 505 service to Coniston, and walk back via Tarn Hows 4 miles.
Take the 525 service to Sawrey or Ferry Nab, and walk back over Claife Heights, or via Lake Windermere shoreline to Belle Grange and back over Claife Heights – 5 miles.
Take the 525 service to the Grizedale visitors centre, and walk back through the forest – 3 – 4miles.
Mountain bike rides
Around Claife Heights:
Quiet country lanes through Colthouse and Wray, then easy off road riding down the shoreline of Lake Windermere. Finally back on the road from Ferry Nab, via Far & Near Sawrey. (Refreshment)
Around Esthwaite Water:
A circuit of Esthwaite Water, all on country lanes with refreshment available half way round at Nr. Sawrey.
